We introduce Robust Training with Trust Scores (RT2S), a framework to train machine learning classifiers with potentially noisy labels. RT2S calculates a trust score for each training sample, which indicates the quality of its corresponding label. These trust scores are employed as sample weights during training and optionally during threshold optimization. The trust scores are generated from two sources

Rapid growth of deep learning models in recent years for robot and fraud detection has led to significant improvement in precision and recall but has also created a challenge for explainability and trust in the model decisions. In this paper, we propose a scalable multitiered framework that generates explainable network request level signatures for crawler bots on a large e-commerce advertising program.

Amodal perception requires inferring the full shape of an object that is partially occluded. This task is particularly challenging on two levels: (1) it requires more information than what is contained in the instant retina or imaging sensor, (2) it is difficult to obtain enough well-annotated amodal labels for supervision. To this end, this paper develops a new framework of Self-supervised amodal Video

Building operations account for a significant portion of global emissions, contributing approximately 28% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the International Energy Agency. With the anticipated increase in cooling demand due to rising global temperatures, the optimization of rooftop units (RTUs) in buildings becomes crucial for reducing energy consumption and associated emissions. We focus

Recent work in scientific machine learning (SciML) has focused on incorporating partial differential equation (PDE) information into the learning process. Much of this work has focused on relatively “easy” PDE operators (e.g., elliptic and parabolic), with less emphasis on relatively “hard” PDE operators (e.g., hyperbolic). Within numerical PDEs, the latter problem class requires control of a type of volume

    2023
In this work, we show how to collect and use human feedback to improve complex models in information retrieval systems. Human feedback often improves model performance, yet little has been shown to combine human feedback and model tuning in an end-to-end setup with public resources. To this end, we develop a system called Crowd-Coachable Retriever (CCR),1 where we use crowd-sourced workers and open-source

With an ever-increasing number of smart edge devices with computation and communication constraints, Federated Learning (FL) is a promising paradigm for learning from distributed devices and their data. Typical approaches to FL aim to learn a single model that simultaneously performs well for all clients. But such an approach may be ineffective when the clients’ data distributions are heterogeneous. We consider the task of predicting subjective fashion traits from images using neural networks. Specifically, we are interested in training a network for ranking outfits according to how well they fit the user. In order to capture the variability induced by human subjective considerations, each training example is annotated by a panel of fashion experts. Similarly to previous works on subjective data, the

We study the problem of Reinforcement Learning (RL) with linear function approximation, i.e. assuming the optimal action-value function is linear in a known d-dimensional feature mapping. Unfortunately, however, based on only this assumption, the worst case sample complexity has been shown to be exponential, even under a generative model. Instead of making further assumptions on the MDP or value functions

Application deadline: Oct 27, 2026 The AWS Data Center Services team is hiring a Principal Applied Scientist to innovate and advance the science behind solutions to problems in the rapidly growing AWS data center space. These problems range from bespoke computer vision models to support our physical infrastructure functions such as repair activities, to increasing the certainty of decisions made by our generative AI service without sacrificing latency or performance. For example, when a data center technician is triaging a critical electrical event at 2am and alarms cascade in seconds, our AI service has to cross-reference topology, live readings, maintenance history, and design documents within minutes - work that today takes an order of magnitude more time and intervention from a senior engineer. As a Principal Applied Scientist, you will work backwards from these problems and partner with software development teams to deliver solutions. You will work on problems ranging from selecting, training and evolving computer vision models for targeted activities on AWS infrastructure inside our data centers; to building smart retrieval algorithms, reduce model hallucination on safety-critical outcomes, continually improve latency and performance, and ensure our generative AI service's knowledgeable stays current and the service is constantly getting smarter beyond just knowledge retrieval. A day in the life You start the morning reviewing traces from last night’s incident triage. The agent correctly walked the topology to the upstream breaker but missed a recent maintenance change that was the real cause — so you design an experiment: does feeding work-order history into the traversal improve accuracy? You test it against historical incident data. Mid-morning, you review verification traces and catch the agent missing a spec deep in a submittal. After lunch, a field engineer walks you through manually cross-referencing five systems during an incident and you turn their scenario into a new benchmark. In the afternoon, you prototype cross-discipline reasoning: when a cascade spans electrical and cooling, can the lead agent delegate scoped investigations and still hold one coherent hypothesis? You publish results and draft a paper. You own the full lifecycle — research through production deployment. About the team Data Center Services is part of AWS Infrastructure Services that owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we’re looking for talented people who want to help. You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
