Amazon Research Awards (ARA) was founded in 2015 and merged with AWS Machine Learning Research Awards (MLRA) in 2020. The program offers unrestricted funds and AWS Promotional Credits to support research at academic institutions and non-profit organizations in areas that align with our mission to advance customer-obsessed science.
ARA funds proposals in a variety of research areas relevant to Amazon such as robotics, machine learning, security, and more. Together ARA and MLRA have funded more than 400 research awards at 150 universities in 28 countries around the world.

The Worldwide Defect Elimination (WWDE) organization in Customer Service drives Amazon towards a defect-free customer experience (CX) by building technology that rapidly identifies and remediates defects, associates them with the information required to resolve the root cause, and prioritizes multitude of improvement opportunities based on customer and business needs. Defect elimination is the upstream solution to achieve perfect CX. A defect when it occurs, causes customer frustration and makes it Amazon’s responsibility to offer appropriate remediation to earn the customer’s trust back leaving little to no margin for error.
