ICML 2023 Workshop on The Many Facets of Preference-based Learning
July 28
Learning from human preferences or preference-based learning has been critical to major advancements in AI and machine learning. It is based on the fact that human beings are naturally more reliable at providing feedback on a relative scale compared to numerical values, so collecting preference feedback is in general more budget-friendly and involves less bias. A recent success story that demonstrated the dormant potential of learning from preference feedback is fine-tuning large language models with a reward function learned from human feedback and reinforcement learning to follow instructions in a dialogue context. There are other areas where preference-based learning has yielded promising results, such as guided image generation, robotics and self-driving vehicles, games, collaborative filtering, simulated continuous control tasks, optimization and search problems, and healthcare. Despite these ground-breaking successes, the most exciting opportunities still lie ahead of us.

ICML 2023 Workshop on What’s left to TEACH (Trustworthy, Enhanced, Adaptable, Capable and Human-centric) chatbots?
July 29
The goal of this workshop is to bring together machine learning researchers and dialogue researchers from academia and industry to encourage knowledge transfer and collaboration on these topics to discover ideas that can expand the use cases of conversational AI. The ideal outcome of the workshop is to identify a set of concrete research directions to enable the next generation of digital assistants.
