Effectively selecting data from population subgroups where a model performs poorly is crucial for improving its performance. Traditional methods for identifying these subgroups often rely on sensitive information, raising privacy issues. Additionally, gathering such information at runtime might be impractical. This paper introduces a cost-effective strategy that addresses these concerns. We identify underperforming
  • The additional modality (such as speech) in multimodal large language models (LLM) increases their vulnerability to adversarial jailbreak attacks. Adversarial training (AT) techniques have shown great promise as defenses in traditional adversarial robustness literature. But they are less explored as countermeasures in speech-enabled LLMs due to the limited availability of training data and computational

Fixed-size learned representations (dense representations, or embeddings) are widely used in many machine learning applications across language, vision or speech modalities. This paper investigates the role of the temperature parameter in contrastive training for text embeddings. We shed light on the impact this parameter has on the intrinsic dimensionality of the embedding spaces obtained, and show that

Target Speech Extraction (TSE) traditionally relies on explicit clues about the speaker’s identity like enrollment audio, face images, or videos, which may not always be available. In this paper, we propose a text-guided TSE model StyleTSE that uses natural language descriptions of speaking style in addition to the audio clue to extract the desired speech from a given mixture. Our model integrates a speech

Audio-Visual Speech-to-Speech Translation (AVS2S) typically prioritizes improving translation quality and naturalness. However, an equally critical aspect in audio-visual content is lip-synchrony—ensuring that the movements of the lips match the spoken content—essential for maintaining realism in dubbed videos. Despite its importance, the inclusion of lip-synchrony constraints in AVS2S models has been largely

Self-supervised pretraining has transformed speech representation learning, enabling models to generalize across various downstream tasks. However, empirical studies have highlighted two notable gaps. First, different speech tasks require varying levels of acoustic and semantic information, which are encoded at different layers within the model. This adds the extra complexity of layer selection on downstream
